Typeform calculator: how it works, what it needs, and a spreadsheet option

Step by step

1. Check what Typeform's price calculation needs

   In Typeform you give each answer option a number, and the score or price variable adds up the numbers as people answer. To use the price variable, Typeform's help article says the form must include a Payment question with Stripe or PayPal, and lists that as available on the Basic plan or higher.

2. Check your questions are supported

   Typeform's help article lists question types that cannot be used with calculations: Contact Info, Email, Phone, Address, Video Answer, Clarify with AI, Ranking and Matrix. It also says a calculation can include a decimal with at most 2 decimal places.

3. See how your price is worked out

   In Typeform's own example, each answer option gets its own rule that adds an amount to the price variable, and one more rule multiplies the total by a quantity the customer enters. If your price is a short list of options times a quantity, that may be all you need. If it comes from a spreadsheet with lookup tables or many rates, note that the article describes adding a rule for each answer option, and describes no way to import a spreadsheet's rates.

4. Or paste your spreadsheet into ChatGPT with CalcForms

5. Say what the customer should see, then test it

   Tell ChatGPT which cells are questions for the customer and which are yours: "The customer enters roof size, material and pitch. Show them the total only." Type in a quote you already know the answer to and compare, then say "publish it" and share the link.

What you will see

A form with one question per input, your spreadsheet's formulas running behind it, and a results panel that shows only the numbers you chose. Every reply reaches you with the calculations done: in ChatGPT, or in the web portal on Pro.

Common mistakes

• Planning to calculate from an Email, Phone or Address question. Typeform's help article lists those, with Contact Info, Video Answer, Clarify with AI, Ranking and Matrix, as unsupported with calculations.
• Starting a price calculation before checking the payment requirement. Per Typeform's help article, the price variable needs a Payment question with Stripe or PayPal.
• Not testing with a real past quote. Always try one you know before you send the link.
